V. Word Classes
A. Word
- basic unit of English language on a sentence and considered as whole can be categorized according to how they work within phrases, clauses and sentences.
-There
are two types of words and they are the Content Words, also known
as Lexical or Open Class Words, and Function Words, also known as
Structural or Close Class Words.
1.) Content
Words
- also
known as Lexical or Open Class Words.
- Noun (Abstract, Concrete, Common,
Proper, etc.), Verb (Transitive and Intransitive), Adjective
(Descriptive, Comparative and Superlative), Adverb (Manner, Time,
Direction, etc.) and some Pronouns (specifically Interrogative
and Demonstrative).

the bulk of a language’s vocabulary or lexical words.
· 2.) Function
Words
- also
known as Structural or Close Class Words
- Pronouns (Personal, Indefinite, Relative and Reflexive Pronouns), Prepositions, Conjunctions, Interjections, Determiners (Articles, Demonstratives, Quantifiers, Possessive Pronouns, etc.) and Verbs (specifically Linking and Helping Verbs).
