WHAT IS MORPHOLOGY?
– study of how words formed – “morphos” (Greek word means “form or shape”)
Morpheme - is a basic unit of meaning in a language and any simple words that are elements of complex words.
(2 types of Morpheme)
- Free Morpheme (can stand-alone words with specific meaning or and the root/base words)
2 Kinds of Free Morphemes: (1) Content Words (words that have meaning that refer to as “open class. Noun, Verb, Adj and Adv are content parts of speech) and; (2) Function Words (exist to explain or create grammatical relationship into which the content words may fit).
- Bound Morpheme (cannot stand-alone words or and affixes).

Categories of Bound Morphemes: (1) Inflectional Morphemes (carry grammatical
meaning) and; (2) Derivational Morphemes (affixes which are added to root words to
change its meaning and function and also called as “Word Formation”).
